The Process of Professionalization of Librarianship in Colombia

Abstract

This article analyzes the professionalization process of librarianship, as part of the investigation “Librarianship as a profession in Colombia”, The methodological approach is of mixed character, and involved experts, practitioners, employers and students. It found that, in fact, librarianship fulfills some dimensions of their professional characterization, but enough improvements are required in their autonomy, code of ethics and professional associations. This study intends to be a contribution to the general knowledge of the librarianship profession and of its professionals that helps to demonstrate many affirmations that always have been associated to the profession, to confirm some approaches and to tear down existing beliefs all that will be used to plan the future.
